William D. Pitts was a land suveyor and amateur historian for many years in the Berlin area. He was always extremely generous with his time and available to all. His personal memories and recollections of stories that he had been told as a child were phenomenal. He maintained and used the survey records of his father and those of Daniel Hudson who had preceded him as County Surveyor. He was meticulous and accurate to a fault and was truly a living legend and treasure. If Mr. Pitts surveyed it or said it, then it was true and correct.

The William D. Pitts Collection of survey records is housed in the Snow Hill branch of the Worcester County Library and is considered to be the most complete set of survey records in the country.

The furnishings of the Museum's Pitts Alcove are from Mr. Pitts' office and were donated to the Museum by Margaret Pitts Calhoun, his daughter, and her daughters. Items of special note are the transit (which is the only one he ever had), and the drafting table, which is a solid block of wood which was used by his father and Daniel Hudson before him. Furnishings are presented as they were found at the time of his death.

A transcript of Mr. Pitts' oral history interview done in 1982 when he was 93 years old is on file in the Museum's Pitts Alcove.
